An Introduction To Ships

For hundreds of years, one of the most effective ways for us to transport ourselves from one place to another has been through ships. Earlier, ships were made from

wood, and generally hand made by large teams working hard over several months.  Today, ship come in several sizes and are made in massive shipyards with steel, iron and mechanized factory lines. They come in several shapes and sizes, different type of functionality, different features, and different capabilities.

Ships are still used by the navy to patrol and protect national waters, and during times of war, to attack from the sea. Ships are used to transport cargo in the form of goods, and are still the largest mode of mass transportation in the world. They are also largely used for fishing and exploring the waters, be it the sea or smaller water bodies. As far as people are concerned, though ships are stillused to transport people, they are largely used for leisure travel and travelling the seas for fun.  Prior to the invention of the steam engine, ships were powered by human power, and people were used to row ships from one place to another, and were aided by the use of sails and the power of the wind. Despite this, it took a lot of time to travel large distances due to the limitations of human power and wind. With the advent of steam engines, all this changed. It became easier to move vehicles without having a special crew to row the boat. Over the last century, things have changed dramatically. We now have ships being powered by motors and engines that use a wide variety of power sources to move the ship from one place to another, coal, diesel, petrol, win power and solar power being a few of them.
